Honomu · Hāmākua Coast · Hawai'i Island
A plantation-era house rebuilt for fourteen people, set in rainforest above the ocean. The deck wraps the building; the outdoor kitchen and hot tub sit under the cabana at the far end.
The house is built the way houses here were built before air conditioning: screened windows on opposing walls, deep eaves, high ceilings, and constant cross-draft off the water. One bedroom has a wall unit for guests who want it. The rest stay cool on airflow alone.
Six bedrooms sleep fourteen. Two are en-suite king rooms, one at each end of the house, so two families can share the place without sharing a wall. A detached guest suite off the deck has its own entrance for whoever arrives last or leaves first.
Akaka Falls State Park is five minutes up the road. Kolekole Beach Park is five minutes down. Hilo is twenty minutes south, which puts the farmers market, the airport, and the Saturday morning traffic all within a short drive and none of it within earshot.
